APR 4-6 (FRI-SUN)         CULP VALLEY, ANZA BORREGO SP       CAR CAMP

Culp Valley, in the Upper Sonoran plant zone, is our base for a hike down the old California Riding and Hiking Trail to Borrego Valley 3000 feet below. We'll be see a variety of plants on the way. On shorter hikes we'll visit local springs: we'll see effects of water sources on plant life and check recovery from a 2002 fire. Primitive campground. OK for passenger cars. APR 5 (SAT) 8:30 AM          SANTA ROSA PLATEAU          HIKE

Spring is the best time to see the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Preserve.  Wildflowers are in bloom, grass is green and vernal pools may even have some water if we get decent rains.  Join me on this easy to moderate hike, 7-10 miles RT, depending on the group, with a 800’ max elevation gain.  We will start at the trailhead near the vernal pools, hike to the historic adobe, then on through oak woodlands, riparian areas and rolling hills.  MEET at 8:30 AM at Ontario Mills parking lot near Dave and Busters.  For those of you in the Elsinore to Temecula areas, we will meet up at the Visitor Center in the Preserve at 9:15 AM  BRING:  water, snacks and lunch, sturdy shoes and layers.  Rain cancels. APR 5 (SAT) 9:00 AM         “YOUTH IN THE DESERT”         HIKE

This hike is one of a series that is geared to be of interest to youth and a responsible adult (parent, aunt, uncle, grandparent etc.)  We will be hiking on the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. This trail zig-zags its way 2650 miles from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon and Washington. We will section hike the historical Horse Thief Canyon. This is open to children of all ages, as long as they can hike a distance of approx 6 miles. The terrain is mostly flat, with some slight hill climbs. We will spend the day exploring, looking for wildlife and native plants. This is a great hike for beginner hikers/children.  We’ll meet at Apple Valley Museum at 9:00 am, and car pool to hike location. APR 5-7 SAT-MON         BIRDS, FLOWERS, FENCES IN THE CARRIZO          SERVICE

This is an opportunity to visit and to assist an outstanding and relatively unknown national monument. On Saturday, we will assist monument staff in the removal of fence wires to allow pronghorn antelope freer access to the range. Sunday is reserved for sightseeing. The views from the Caliente Mountains are spectacular; if rain has been sufficient, there will be spring flowers; and the monument is known for the number and variety of raptors present. APR 6 (SUN) 8 AM        CEDAR SPRINGS TO SPITLER PEAK TRAIL         HIKE

This moderate-to-strenuous 13-mile hike in the San Jacinto Mountains will require a car shuttle.  We will start from the Cedar Springs Trailhead (off Hwy 74/Morris Ranch Road) and hike northeast for about 1.5 miles until we reach the PCT and then we’ll take the PCT north for about 7 miles (along the way we’ll summit Spitler Peak). When we reach the Spitler Peak Trail, we will take it down to its trailhead( approximately 5 miles) where our car shuttle will be parked off Apple Canyon Road.  CALL or EMAIL for meeting place to carpool. APR 8 (TUE) 8:00 AM        SANTA ANA RIVER TO CRAM/MORTON PKS        HIKE

This 12-mile round trip hike has a 2800 ft elevation gain. Great views of the Santa Ana River drainage. Bring water layered clothing and hiking boots. APR 8 (TUE) 9:00 AM          SB MTS, EXPLORATION TRAIL        HIKE

The Exploration Trail was constructed by the young people of the Children's Forest in 2002. The vegetation and the views change constantly as we hike to the top and back. Distance: 9 miles RT. APR 12-13 (SAT-SUN)        BIRDS AND BEAT THE TAMARISK        SERVICE TRIP

Help remove invasive salt cedar from the wetlands along the shore of Owens Lake at the base of the spectacular eastern Sierra Nevada scarp.  While we will work both days, there will be time to enjoy the birds and scenic attractions.  We'll car camp at Diaz Lake just south of Lone Pine where birds congregate and also watch the migratory birds on the re-watered part of the Owens Lake.  We can also visit the new Lone Pine Film History Museum and Manzanar N.M. Bring camping essentials (though motels are close), food, water, work clothes and gloves. Plan on a happy hour and potluck dinner on Saturday evening. APR 12-13 (SAT-SUN)        WIND WOLVES, TEJON RANCH        CARCAMP/HIKING

Enjoy pine forests and the picturesque high country of our San Emigdio Range and the grasslands of Wind Wolves. We will be immersing ourselves into an environment that is very similar to Tejon Ranch, by visiting the Wind Wolves Preserve. We will tour the proposed development areas, as well as the highly unique areas within Wind Wolves and climb an unnamed peak (5152’). We may see deer, elk, raptors, flowers, rock art, more. Take time to learn from our naturalists about the fauna and flora, help us plan the next stages in our goal to create a new state or national park. Lots of driving. Some easy hiking. We'll carcamp at Wind Wolves for one night, so bring your best potluck items, ideas (become an integral part of the campaign).  Group size limited to 30. Moderate 6-mile descent into Jacoby Canyon from the Lucky Baldwin Mine, with about a 700 ft elevation change.  There will be a scenic mixture of pine and chaparral vegetation.  Bring sturdy boots, water, snacks and layered clothing.  National Forest Adventure Passes will be required for drivers.   We will meet at Vons parking lot in BBL at 9am.  LEADER:  DICK BANKS  909-866-9232.       BIG BEAR GROUP

APR 20 (SUN) 7AM      WARNER SPRINGS TO INDIAN FLATS CG ROAD       HIKE

An easy 4-mile round trip hike with little elevation gain. Great views of the desert as we wind our way along this portion of the Pacific Crest Trail and loop back to our starting point with a easy cross country jaunt Bring water layered clothing and hiking boots. APR 26 (SAT) 8AM         BIG MORONGO & INFAMOUS "GREEN" PATH        HIKE

Here's the chance to combine a scenic tour of the BLM Big Morongo Area of Critical Environmental Concern with learning more about a serious threat to our desert.  Have you heard of the notorious "Green Path North" Los Angeles power line project proposed through sensitive desert areas Riverside and SB Counties?  We'll drive and hike the part of this project that traverses Little Morongo Canyon, possibly seeing resident bighorn sheep.  Moderate loop hike, with some scrambling around a small waterfall, approx 8 mi RT, 1500 elev gain.  BRING lunch, 2 qts water, layers.  MEET call JOAN TAYLOR 760-778-1101 for info.  High clearance vehicle needed.        TAHQUITZ GROUP

APR 30 (WED) 9:00 AM          COUGAR CREST TRAIL TO BERTHA PK         HIKE

This is a 6-mile hike, moderate up Cougar Crest Trail and the PCT, followed by a short, but more difficult, ascent to Bertha Peak summit at 8500 ft above sea level.  There you will have a 360-degree view of the Bear Valley, Holcomb Valley and Mojave Desert, making the extra effort well worth it.  Sturdy boots and layered clothing will help deal with the changing terrain and altitude.  Also bring plenty of water and snacks.  We will meet at Vons parking lot in BBL at 9am.  LEADER:  DICK BANKS  909-866-9232.         BIG BEAR GROUP

MAY 3 (SAT) 7:00 AM        YOUTH IN THE DESERT – JUNIPER FLATS        HIKE

We will explore the importance of desert riparian areas in Arrastre Canyon for wildlife as well as an attraction for humans. Youth in the Desert Hikes are open to youth of all ages, as long as they can hike a distance of approx 6 miles and they have a responsible adult with them. The terrain is hilly and may be strenuous for some. We will take our time to rest and explore, making it an all day event.  In addition to riparian areas there are large boulders (including a water cave) and lovely views of the valley.  MEET:  Apple Valley Museum at 7:00 am, and car pool/caravan to the trailhead. While on this moderate hike, we will focus on what is around us at the moment; sights and  sounds of the forest, and our reactions to them. While on the trail, by talking about only what we see, hear and experience, we should be able to better appreciate what is out there. We will hike the North Shore Trail to Little Bear Creek. MAY 3 (SAT)        PICTOGRAPH/“GREEN” PATH        HIKE

Spring in Icehouse Canyon – the water is high, the Columbines are in bloom and it’s a nice walk up to the saddle.  MEET at 8:30 AM at Indian Hill and Foothill in Claremont, PFF Bank parking lot.  Wear hiking, layers, bring 2 qts. MAY 6 (TUE) 8:30 AM       HWY 18 TO BEAR CREEK         HIKE

A strenuous 8mile hike with 2000 ft elevation loss and gain. This hike takes us to the bottom of woodsy Bear Creek canyon. We will lunch in the shade along side babbling Bear Creek. **MAY 8 (THU) 8:30 AM         GOLD MOUNTAIN         HIKE

This is a Peaks of Big Bear hike. Hikes to the five major peaks overlooking the Big Bear Valley will be made at least twice during the 2008-hiking season. Those reaching all five peaks will be given a patch commemorating the effort.  Moderate 6 to 8-mile hike to the peak of Gold Mountain and return, with a 1000 – 1200-foot altitude gain.  We will access our destination from one of two 4WD trails, from either highway 18 or Holcomb Valley Road.  BRING:  2 quarts of water, snacks, sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing and protection from the sun.  MEET:  Von’s Parking lot at 8:30 AM.  Adventure passes may be required for drivers.  For information and registration contact LEADER:  Dick Banks at 909-866-9232.         BIG BEAR GROUP

Come join us for an easy 10 mile hike on the PCT from Hwy 138 at Silverwood Lake to Interstate 15 in the Cajon Pass. We will hike along the PCT thru Oak and Pinion shrubs with views of Oak Hills and Hesperia. Minimal elevation gain/loss. Bring 2-3 qts of water, sturdy boots and lunch/snacks. MAY 10-11 (SAT-SUN)      NAVIGATION NOODLE IN THE MOJAVE NP        COURSE

MAY 17-18 (SAT-SUN)       JOHNS MEADOW TRAIL CAMP        BACKPACK

This 8-mile round trip backpack in the San Gorgonio Wilderness provides an early condition trip and is suitable for those that would like to try backpacking for the first time. Backpacks and some tents available on a first come first serve bases. For first timers we will schedule a pre trip meeting. Space is limited. MAY 17-18 (SAT-SUN)       TWO DAYHIKES IN THE PANAMINTS         CARCAMP

Join us as we explore higher desert trails near Death Valley in the Panamint Mountains. The first day will be a hike (2550 feet gain, 7 miles RT) up Wildrose Peak, and the second will be a longer walk (2900 feet gain, 13 miles RT) up Telescope peak. While it will be hot and hectic at lower elevations, we should enjoy quiet and long views. Carcamping may include the civilized amenities, and Saturday evening will be a potluck meal. MAY 18 (SUN) 3:00 PM          FULL MOON HOLCOMB VALLEY        HIKE

"Try And Catch The Full Moon Holcomb Valley Gold Fever Trail" Hike Series.  Hike #1 of 4.    William F. Holcomb you ask? The largest Southern California Gold Rush ever! The 'almost' full moon rises at 7:02 pm and we should catch it near the end of our hike. From Holcomb Valley Campground we backtrack 2. 5 miles to the 1st Marker of the trail, ”Holcomb Valley View Trail” and enjoy the view. Traveling back into the valley, we reach Marker #2 “Last Chance Placer”, remnants of placer mining. Elevation gain of 240 feet, covering 5 miles, and our travel time should be 3 to 4 hours.  After the hike, we will go to B’s Backyard B-B-Q for dinner and drinks.  Bring water, snacks, hiking shoes, layered clothing for the evening, and a flashlight or headlamp.  MEET:  Von¹s parking lot in Big Bear Lake at 3pm. Just east of the Sweetwater Mountains and north of Bridgeport on the California-Nevada border are the Pine Grove Hills and the newly proposed Wovoka Wilderness Area. This is a Peaks of Big Bear hike. Hikes to the five major peaks overlooking the Big Bear Valley will be made at least twice during the 2008-hiking season. Those reaching all five peaks will be given a patch commemorating the effort.  Hike is moderate/difficult, 7 miles, 1120 ft. elevation gain. The trailhead is located on the west side of Hwy. 38, 0.6 miles west of Fawnskin, across from the Grout Bay picnic area.  Adventure pass required. This is a Peaks of Big Bear hike.  Hikes to the five major peaks overlooking the Big Bear Valley will be made at least twice during the 2008-hiking season. Those reaching all five peaks will be given a patch commemorating the effort.  This hike has a strenuous, 8 miles, 2,000 ft. elevation gain. Great views of San Gorgonio and the Santa Ana River drainage can be seen from the peak area. BRING:  Water, snacks, layered clothing, and hiking boots. Come for the weekend or just the day at Green Spot Group Campground off Highway 38 in Big Bear Valley. Camping is limited to 8 vehicles and 25 people at this primitive campsite with pit toilets and no water. Call to reserve your spot before while they last. Don’t want to camp? Come for the day on Saturday, June 7th from 11 to 4. There will be a potluck picnic lunch beginning at noon followed by a class in compass and map reading. Then you’ll put your new skills to work during a short local hike. We’ll end the day with a game or two. No need to RSVP for the picnic. Just show up with your potluck item. All picnic folks will need to leave the campground at 4 P.M. in accordance with out Forest Service Permit. The Devil's Punchbowl is a unique geologic feature in the foothills near Pearblossom. David Numer, naturalist for the area, will talk to us about the geology of the area before we hike down this fascinating place. He will also guide us to a great place to view the San Andreas Fault up close. There will be an opportunity to see some of the wildlife of the area such as snakes and birds.  This hike is part of our Youth in the Desert hike series, designed for children and a responsible adult. JUN 20 (FRI) 4:00 PM         FULL MOON HOLCOMB VALLEY         HIKE

"Try And Catch The Full Moon Holcomb Valley Gold Fever Trail" Hike Series Hike Number 2 of 4.  Yes, it¹s the Summer Solstice!  Longest day of the year!!  Earliest summer in 116 years!!! The moon does not rise until 10:02 pm, so we will miss this one. Continuing our gold fever trail, we will start out at Holcomb Valley Campground and hike to “Two Gun Bill¹s Saloon”, “Grasshopper Quartz Mill”, “Hangman’s Tree”, the “Original Gold Diggin’s” discovery area, “Belleville”, “Arrastres Gold Ore Grinder”, “Ross’ Grave”, and the ”Pygmy Cabin Site”.  Elevation gain of 200 feet, covering 5 miles.
