Please join me for a 3-6 mile fast paced conditioning walk along the Mojave River.  Meet at the Victor Valley Museum on Apple Valley Road. The path along the river bed is graded and hard packed, which makes for nice walking conditions. FEB 7 (SUN)       WILLOW HOLE BY WAY OF WONDERLAND JTNP        HIKE

This is a Joshua Tree hike we’ve been doing for our own pleasure but had to guess our way through the last part in Wonderland because there is only one way. We think we’ve got it down now enough to share. Come take your chances with us and we’ll hope for a nice day. Wonderland sparkles in the sunlight. I’m going to call it strenuous. It’s about a seven hour hike depending on the group. Bring layerable clothing as well as lunch, good BOOTS and two quarts of water. FEB 7 (SUN) 7:00 AM      CHANTRY FLAT TO MT. ZION VIA STURTEVANT TRAIL     HIKE

What a blessing that this beautiful trail was not affected by the fires!  Let’s hike to Mt. FEB 13 (SAT)       SUNRISE CANYON TO MULE CANYON        HIKE

Come join other hikers for a 10-11 mile high desert hike thru the Calico Mts from Sunrise Canyon to Mule Canyon. Bring 2 to 3qts of water, sturdy boots and lunch/snacks. Meet at the BLM parking lot on Barstow Rd. across from Barstow College. FEB 13 (SAT) 9:00 AM       COTTONWOOD SPRINGS TO STONE SPRING         HIKE

This hike is in the Juniper Flats Area of Critical Environmental Concern, which is protected for its cultural values. Today, the two springs provide important water, food and shelter for wildlife and are joined by a short wash in a sheltered canyon. The hike is a loop of about 4 miles. There are also views of the mountains along the way and a possibility of raptor sightings (don’t forget your binoculars!). We will check the springs for water and cattle impacts. Cattle may be present, but are docile when not harassed (they are cows not bulls!).Wear layered clothing, hat and bring plenty of water/snacks. FEB 13 (SAT) 8:00 AM        OLIVE MOUNTAIN RAMBLE        HIKE

FEB 14 (SUN) 1:30 PM        SAN GABRIEL MTNS NORTH ETIWANDA PRESERVE        HIKE

This hike will be part of the San Gabriel Mountains Forever East Campaign to add wilderness acreage to Cucamonga Wilderness.  We will write postcards to Congressman David Dreier on a break.  Cards and mailing will be provided.  This will be an easy hike around the new North Etiwanda Preserve loop. Easy. FEB 19 (FRI) 7:00 AM         JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK         HIKE

We will utilize a portion of the Boy Scout Trail on this 17 mile moderate to strenuous hike which will take us through the Wonderland of Rocks to Willow Hole. FEB 20 (SAT) 8:00 AM        BIRD WATCHING STROLL LAKE SKINNER         WALK

Meet 8:00 AM at the store inside the park. Easy walking in different park areas- along shore, campground and lawns , with lots of stops to find  and enjoy the year-round and wintering birds. We often see 20-30 species on this walk, including a burrowing owl. Dress for the weather, bring binoculars, water and a snack. FEB 27 (SAT)         YOUTH IN THE DESERT PCT HIKE         HIKE

Come join other youth and their parents/grandparents for a 7 mile hike  (approx) on the Pacific Crest Trail. Bring 2 qts of water, sturdy boots, lunch & snacks. We will hike 3 ½ miles in one direction, take a lunch break and hike back. The actual location on the trail will be determined as the date gets closer, but rainy/foul weather cancels hike. Join us as we explore the Mecca Hills Wilderness Area east of Indio, CA.  We will hike through the gravel washes and rocky hills to several well-known and spectacular sites. Saturday we visit Hidden Springs and the Grottos, and Sunday we will explore Painted Canyon. Carcamping will include the civilized amenities, potluck supper, and campfire Saturday night. We call this our new member hike but all are welcome.  Enjoy an easy 5 to 5 1/2 mile hike over various trails in the reserve.  We will vary the route  to take advantage of blooming flowers and the wonders of the vernal pools at their best. When available we invite guest speakers from the Reserve's staff to enlighten us and give us some background about what we are seeing.  We meet at the Hidden Valley Trail head. "Rain Cancels" Bring water a lunch and dress in layers. Green Valley Lake has some of the best snow in our local mountains, so come and join me for a day of fun. You need to provide your own equipment, and prior experience on snowshoes is required. MEET in the parking lot behind Lloyds restaurant on Hwy 18 in Running Springs at 8:30 am to carpool. MAR 6-7 (SAT-SUN)        DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK         EXPLORATORY TOUR

Come and experience a sample of the many wonders offered in this national park.  Beginning in Shoshone on Saturday morning, we will travel north on Hwy 178 with a stop at Badwater, and easy two-mile hikes at Natural Bridge and Golden Canyon.  Camp at Texas Springs ($14/site).  If time allows, drive to Zambriskie Point and Dante’s View.  Sunday morning, visit the museum and visitor center in Furnace Creek, see the rare pupfish at Salt Creek, and take a two-mile hike to the highest sand dune.  Possible hike into Mosaic Canyon.  For those who want to stay Sunday night, camp at Stovepipe Wells ($12/site).  Option of primitive camping on Friday night.  For reservations, contact LEADER, CAROL WILEY, at desertlily1@verizon.net or call (760) 245-8734.         CNRCC DESERT COMMITTEE/MOJAVE GROUP

Start your weekend off burning calories and getting conditioned by doing a 5-6 mile moderate to fast paced conditioning walk.  We will walk around the neighborhood mostly uphill on pavement.  It will take us about two hours to do this loop.   Bring:  Water, a flashlight, good walking/running shoes, and lots of energy. We will meet in Albertsons’ Shopping Center parking lot, close to the Mobil gas station located on the corner of Soquel Canyon and Butterfield Ranch Road in Chino Hills. This is a difficult 12-mile hike with 2800 feet of elevation gain on a good trail.  There are many great views on the way to the lookout tower at the peak.  Bring layered clothing appropriate to the weather, plenty of water, sturdy boots, snacks and lunch.  Those coming from the mountain areas meet at the Vons parking lot at 8:00 AM.  Those from the Redlands/Yucaipa area meet us at the Mill Creek Ranger Station at 9:00 AM.  Please call Dick Banks for reservations and information at 909-866-9232.      BIG BEAR GROUP

 

MAR 13 (SAT) 9 AM       DEEP CREEK HIKE         HIKE

Join us on a lovely hike to Deep Creek from the Juniper Flats Area. We begin near Round Mountain and gently descend approximately 1,350 feet to the Creek, a little upstream from the Deep Creek Hot Springs. Hike is 6 miles round trip with lovely views and a gorgeous location for a picnic beside the gurgling creek. We will get a chance to admire Deep Creek which is proposed as a Wild and Scenic River in Senator Feinstein's California Desert Protection Act of 2010. We will also check for cattle impacts to the creek by cows straying off the Round Mountain Cattle Allotment. MAR 13-14 (SAT-SUN)        FENCE REMOVAL/HIKING/CARCAMP ON THE CARRIZO  PLAIN

Come help remove fences on the Cal Dept of Fish and Game Reserve.  At this time of year, the Carrizo may be turning green, and if the winter has been wet, there should be wildflowers.  Work Saturday, camp and potluck dinner that evening.  Hike Sunday.  Bring leather gloves, warm clothes with long sleeves and legs, dish for potluck on Saturday night.  Leaders will be at Selby Camp on Friday night for those who want to arrive early. Come with us to this spectacular landscape near Death Valley to visit the desert leprechauns and explore the ruins of California's colorful past.  Camp at the historic ghost town of Ballarat (flush toilets & hot showers).  On Saturday, do a very challenging hike to ghost town Lookout City with expert Hal Fowler who will regale us with tales of this Wild West town.  Later we'll return to camp for Happy Hour, a St. Patty's Day potluck feast and campfire.  On Sunday, a quick visit to the infamous Riley town site before heading home.  Group size strictly limited.  Send $8 per person (Sierra Club), 2 sase, H&W phones, email, rideshare info to LDR:  LYGEIA GERARD, P.O. Join retired photographer & teacher Graham Stafford on a car camp trip to Death Valley, a photographer’s wonderland. Visit Eureka Dunes, dunes at Stove Pipe Wells, dunes at Saratoga Springs, the Racetrack, and Artist Drive. All levels of photography experience accepted---beginners encouraged. MAR 14-20 (SUN-SAT)         GLEN CANYON/ESCALANTE RIVER                 SERVICE TRIP/BACKPACK

Assist the National Park Service in eradicating Russian Olive from the Escalante River.   Working under the direction of Park Ranger Bill Wolverton, we will gather up slash from previous service trips and burn it. Since 2000, over half of the river has been cleared.  Meet in Escalante, Utah Sunday morning, March 14, caravan out to the trailhead and hike in. Work four days, day hike one day and hike out Saturday morning March 20. Start your weekend off burning calories and getting conditioned by doing a 5-6 mile moderate to fast paced conditioning walk.  We will walk around the neighborhood mostly uphill on pavement.  It will take us about two hours to do this loop.   Bring:  Water, a flashlight, good walking/running shoes, and lots of energy. We will meet in Albertsons’ Shopping Center parking lot, close to the Mobil gas station located on the corner of Soquel Canyon and Butterfield Ranch Road in Chino Hills. MAR 20-21 (SAT-SUN)         OVERNIGHT BACKPACK IN PANAMINTS          BACKPACK

North of Surprise Canyon on the west side of the Panamints, Hall Canyon and Jail Canyon descend into the Panamint Valley from the slopes of Telescope Peak.  This will be a loop trip taking in the lower reaches of these canyons.  On Saturday, we'll hike up Hall Canyon and camp.  On Sunday, we'll make our way across the dividing ridge between Hall Canyon and Jail Canyon and descend the 4WD route to the road.  The canyon mouths are short enough that we won't need to set up a car shuttle.  For more information, contact LEADER:  JOHN WILKINSON (408) 876-8295, johnfw1@mac.com.          CNRCC DESERT COMMITTEE

 

**MAR 21 (SUN) 8:00 AM         DRIPPING SPRINGS TRIAL       HIKE 

Take a challenging 14 mile hike (up and back) hike through the Agua Tibia Wilderness on the Dripping Springs Trail.  This hike is a strenuous hike of about 8 hours with 3,100 ft of elevation gain and loss.  There are some awesome views of Vail Lake and the Temecula Valley along the way. MAR 21 (SUN)        CONTACT WASH - JOSHUA TREE NP        HIKE

This is a scramble down a steep wash that is accessed through Pine City by way of the Queen Mine parking lot. There are all sorts of twists and turns to be negotiated. You have to think your way through allot of dry waterfalls that definitely put you in the moment. This is a good one to forget your other life.  About six miles. It is strenuous and I strongly recommend ankle high boots. Bring a lunch with lots of protein and a couple of quarts of your favorite outdoor drink. We will use a new trail map to discover some of the many bike/hike trails and enjoy the wildflowers. Join us on a moderate 6 mile ( RT ), 1,000 ft elevation gain hike located north west of Lake Arrowhead. This hike includes some rock scrambling to reach the summit, which comprises an imposing stack of large granite boulders. APR 3 (SAT) 9:00 AM        SANTA ROSA ECOLOGICAL RESERVE         HIKE

We call this our new member hike but all are welcome.  Enjoy an easy 5 to 5 1/2 mile hike over various trails in the reserve.  We will vary the route  to take advantage of blooming flowers and the wonders of the vernal pools at their best. When available we invite guest speakers from the Reserve's staff to enlighten us and give us some background about what we are seeing.  We meet at the Hidden Valley Trail head. "Rain Cancels" Bring water a lunch and dress in layers. **APR 4 (SUN)  8:00 AM          SAN SEVAIN FLATS TO CUCAMONGA PEAK         HIKE

Fortunately for us, this trail is not widely used so we may have the mountain to ourselves!  San Sevaine Flats, is pleasant and inviting and mostly covered with chaparral.  There are groves of oak, spruce, cedar and pine scattered here and there in little flats and gullies.  San Sevaine  Flats is the largest of these forested glens.  We will hike 12 miles RT from the trailhead and gain 3,300 feet in elevation.  This will be a strenuous hike so, come prepared!  Bring:  Hiking boots, at least two liters of water, food/snacks, dress in layers as we do not know how the weather may be in April.  Please call or email me before the hike.  I will be checking the weather conditions for snow or ice on the trail.  If you have snowshoes and/or crampons, it may be necessary to bring one or both.  We will know as the date approaches. APR 5-10 (MON-SAT)         WILDFLOWERS AND FENCE REMOVAL-CARRIZO PLAIN         SERVICE

This outing will include three and a half days of service to the Carrizo Plain National Monument, removing and modifying fences to allow resident pronghorn to travel more widely. This is the spring wildflower season, and our schedule allows at least a day for exploring, either hiking or driving backcountry roads. With longer daylight hours there may also be time to visit sights in the monument after work. Because we are privileged to be staying at one of the old ranch houses, our trip is limited to 14 participants. $30 covers five dinners. Culp Valley, in the Upper Sonoran plant zone, is our base for a hike down the old California Riding and Hiking Trail to Borrego Valley 3000 feet below. We'll be see a variety of plants on the way. On shorter hikes we'll visit local springs: we'll see effects of water sources on plant life and check recovery from a 2002 fire. Primitive campground. OK for passenger cars. This is a moderate 10-mile hike with about 800 to 1000-feet of elevation gain.  We will descend from the South Fork parking lot on the Santa Ana Trail to its intersection with Glass Road.  We will return via Glass Road along the Santa Ana River.  We will meet at Vons in Big Bear Lake at 9:00 AM. APR 16-18 (FRI-SUN)        MOJAVE NATIONAL PRESERVE          SERVICE TRIP

Come help restore an historic water feature to provide water for wildlife.  The work involves protecting several springs by earth work, stabilization work, putting up a fence and some infrastructure in and around a qanat. Our effort will be directed by staff from the Mojave National Preserve.  A hike is planned for Friday for those arriving in the morning, if the rains are good this year, there may be plenty of wildflowers.  We will work all day Saturday and until noon on Sunday.  There will be a ranger talk about the Preserve on Saturday evening. If there are to be wildflowers this year, the Juniper Flats Area is one of the places to enjoy the display. Set in the foot hills of the San Bernardino Mountains, it is just a short drive from Apple Valley. We will enjoy a leisurely hike about 5 miles round trip. the Juniper Flats Area also offers fabulous views and boulder fields. Be sure to bring your camera and binoculars! APR 24-25 (SAT-SUN)          EXPLORING THE MOJAVE NATIONAL PRESERVE         CARCAMP

We will meet Saturday morning 9:00 AM at the Teutonia Peak trailhead on Cima Road and hike to Teutonia Peak and out on Cima Dome.  Primitive carcamp at Sunrise Rock.  Sunday morning, visit the museum/visitor center at Kelso Depot and then on to hike Kelso Dunes.  These dunes have various nicknames including the singing dunes and the moaning dunes due to the sounds that they often make, but whatever you call then, they are impressive.  For those who want to spend another night, we can camp at the Granite Mountains.  For reservations contact LEADER: CAROL WILEY at desertlily1@verizon.net or (760) 245-8734.        CNRCC DESERT COMMITTEE/MOJAVE GROUP

 

APR 24-25 (SAT-SUN)         ROCK ART IN EASTERN CALIFORNIA        EXPLORATORY

Comfortable spring weather is an ideal time to go exploring. On Saturday, we visit three rock art sites in the southern Owens Valley area bordering the Coso Mountains. On Sunday we will be escorted to (the astonishing) Little Petroglyph Canyon on the China Lake Naval Weapons Station. As government restrictions apply here, all arrangements and confirmations must be completed by April 1 (no joking). High clearance 2WD sufficient, day hiking, Sat. evening potluck. MAY 8 (SAT) 7:30 AM           TOUR OF SPRINGS IN JUNIPER FLATS         4X4 TOUR/HIKE

We will drive to several of the numerous springs in the Juniper Flats Area. This requires 4x4 or at least high a clearance vehicle and some walking. The hikes will include several of about a mile and the tour will take all day. Fill your vehicle with friends, bring plenty of water, lunch, snacks, wear layered clothing and hat. The Juniper Flats Area is in the foot hills of the San Bernardino Mountains, close to Apple Valley.  **JUN 5-6 (SAT-SUN)          LEADERSHIP TRAINING           COURSE
