APRIL 1 – APRIL 8 Please read “LIABILITY WAIVER” preceding these listings (Also refer to Weekly reoccurring Outings and Activities) APR 6 (FRI) 6:00 PM MOONLIGHT HIKE HIKE Come for a 2 to 3 hour evening hike in the foothills to enjoy the “full” moon. (Actual full moon is April 6.) Hikes are moderately paced. Between 4 and 5 miles rt, 400 to 1200 ft elev.. Hike locations will vary. MEET: North parking lot of U.S. Bank, Claremont, at NE corner of Indian Hill & Foothill Blvds. BRING: Jacket, flashlight, water, and wear sturdy shoes/boots. RAIN CANCELS. INFO: Leader Joe Whyte 909-949-0899 LOS SERRANOS GROUP APR 7 (SAT) 8:00 AM JO POND TRAIL & PINE MOUNTAIN LOOP HIKE This is a strenuous 11 mile hike with a 1,500' elevation gain within the San Bernardino National Forest. The hike will allow access to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) towards Pine Mountain (approximately 7,000 feet high) and then loop back to Morris Ranch Road. A short one-mile shuttle between starting and ending designations is necessary. RATING: Strenuous MEET: At Jo Pond Trailhead by taking Hwy 74 to Morris Ranch Road in Garner Valley, turn north and follow the signs to Jo Pond Trailhead. APR 7-8 (SAT-SUN) MOJAVE NATIONAL PRESERVE HIKE & CAR CAMP Saturday morning we will meet at Teutonia Peak trailhead on Cima Road for a hike to Teutonia Peak and out onto Cima Dome and then camp at Sunrise Rocks, which is primitive camping. Sunday we will hike from Midhills to Hole-in-the-Wall. This is an 8 mile, downhill hike and if the timing is right could have wonderful windflowers. For those wanting to arrive on Friday we can go out to the Rock Springs Loop Trail. For those wanting to stay overnight on Sunday we can primitive camp near the Kelso Dunes and hike the dunes on Monday morning. MOJAVE GROUP APRIL 9 - APRIL 15 Please read “LIABILITY WAIVER” preceding these listings (Also refer to Weekly reoccurring Outings and Activities) **APR 10 (TUE) 8:30 AM HIGHWAY 38 TO WILDHORSE CREEK LOOP HIKE Moderate, 8 miles, 1400 ft. elevation gain. The trail which climbs chaparral covered slopes and descends into a lush forest along Wildhorse Creek. We will return on a seldom used and unmaintained trail along Wildhorse Creek. Great views of San Gorgonio Mountain. A short car scuttle is required. Bring 2 qts. water, layered clothing, hiking boots and snacks. National Forest Adventure Pass required. We will meet at Von’s parking lot in Big Bear Lake. For information call Ed (909) 584-9407 BIG BEAR GROUP APR 10 (TUE) 9:00 AM UPPER MARSHALL CANYON HIKE After "getting up" you can join us in "upper" Marshall Canyon. It's a moderate rated convoluted 4.5 mile trek that winds it way via a 750' elevation gain to the loop's top. There's plenty of foliage and views on this one, thanks to the city of La Verne for making this a Regional Park for all to enjoy! BRING: water, hiking sticks, sturdy boots and layered clothing. LOS SERRANOS GROUP APR 11 (WED) 5:00 PM HIKE TO THE “M” HIKE 4 mile round trip hike to the “M” on Box Springs. Difficult trail with some very steep areas. BRING: water, flashlight, and sturdy shoes. MEET: from 60fwy in Moreno Valley go north on Pigeon Pass to left at the light on Hidden Springs Drive. Driveway into Box Springs Park is on the left off Hidden Springs Drive. MORENO VALLEY GROUP APR 14 (SAT) 8:00 AM PALM CANYON/INDIAN POTRERO BACKPACKING ATTENTION Experienced Backpackers take a 20 mile trip through the historic Santa Rosa Mountains Palm Canyon and the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation. This will be a through-hike starting at the south entrance to Palm Canyon at Hwy 74/Pine View Drive and ending beyond the Indian Trading Post. This will be a shuttle hike requiring a few backpackers to leave their cars near the Indian Trading Post and others leaving their vehicles at the entrance to the Palm Canyon trail head. RATING: Moderate MEET: Take Hwy 74 south from Palm Desert and proceed approximately 15 miles and look for a sign indicating Pine View Drive. Turn east on Pine View Drive and drive less than .5 miles and look for a sign indicating Palm Canyon Trailhead. We will meet there at 8:00 A.M. APR 14 (SAT) 9 AM SUNRISE CANYON TO MULE CANYON HIKE Come join other hikers for a moderate 9 mile hike thru Sunrise Canyon into Mule Canyon. This is great chance to hike into the Calico Mtns. by way of two multi-colored rock canyons northeast of Barstow. Bring sturdy boots, 2-3 quarts of water and lunch/snacks. For more info and meeting place contact Terrence McCorkle at 760-252-2194or oldhikerdude@verizon.net MOJAVE GROUP **APR 14 (SAT) 9:00 AM BEAR CANYON LOOP TRAIL HIKE Join us on a 6.5 mile hike in the Santa Ana mountains. The Bear Canyon Loop Trail is a moderately difficult hike with about 1,000 ft. Elevation gain. This trail, located just off Hwy 74 and near the famous and friendly Ortega Oaks Candy Store, begins with road noise and speeding traffic, but quite awaits once you enter the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness Three quarters of a miles into the hike the trail intersects the Morgan Tr. Two miles in we will come to an intersection where we will begin the loop part of the hike. We hike out to Four Corners, an intersection of several trails via the Bear Ridge Rd and return on the Bear Canyon Tr. Directions from Lake Elsinore: Travel southwest on Highway 74 venturing into the mountains, then passing the Visitor Center / Fire Station in El Cariso. Proceed another 3.6 miles on Hwy. 74 to reach the trail head. Parking is available at the San Juan Loop. Across from the Candy Store. "Rain Cancels" Bring water a lunch and dress in layers. Cars parked at the trail head must display a Wilderness Pass, available at sporting goods stores. The hike starts at Bailey Park and follows an excellent trail to the peak. We will make this hike a loop via the Mt. Wilson Trail. Call leader for meeting place and carpooling. BRING: water, flashlight, and sturdy shoes. MEET: From 60fwy in Moreno Valley, exit on Pigeon Pass. Drive north on Pigeon Pass about 4 miles, turns into Box Springs Mountain Rd. and soon turns to dirt. In 1.2 miles you reach the parking area on the right. Rain cancels. APR 20-22 (FRI-SUN) CULP VALLEY, ANZA BORREGO STATE PARK CAR CAMP Culp Valley, in the Upper Sonoran plant zone, is our base for a hike down the old California Riding and Hiking Trail to Borrego Valley 3000 feet below. We'll be see a variety of plants on the way. On shorter hikes we'll visit local springs: we'll see effects of water sources on plant life and check recovery from a 2002 fire. Primitive campground. MOUNTAINS GROUP We hiked this trail in the winter and faced the freezing snow and wind. After completing the winter hike, we said, "Let's return in the Spring and see this trail in bloom! So, here is your chance! This trail climbs quickly and steadily to give the hiker a superb workout and views of the desert valleys, Banning Pass, and the San Gorgonio Mountains to the north. This is a 7.0 mile hike with a 2,600' elevation gain. RATING: Strenuous MEET: We will meet at the trail head. Take I-10 to Banning and take Hwy 243 south towards Idyllwild. The first trailhead on your way up the mountain is the Black Mountain Trail. Precede off Hwy 243 about 200 feet and park in the designated area. BIG BEAR GROUP APR 21 (SAT) 8:30 AM WILDFLOWER HIKE IN JUNIPER FLATS AREA HIKE The Juniper Flats Area is close and one of the best for viewing wildflowers in the High Desert. Hopefuly this year will bring out some of our favorites: goldfields, nodding bells, desert parsley, bajada lupines, gray ball sage, coreopsis, phacelia (washoa & lace leaf), Wallace's wooley Daisy, white forget me nots, Joshua Tree, antelope bush, desert almond etc. We will enjoy a leisurely hike about 3-5 miles round trip from the Vatican to Hidden Arch. Best to bring a hiking stick along and plenty of water, snacks/lunch, camera and binoculars. Wear layers, hat and hiking boots/shoes. This Big Bear premiere lake vista hike for the fit, is rated moderate/strenuous due to altitude and pitch within the 1.6 mile R/T adventure. The trailhead is at 7,000' and there is a 700' elevation gain in just 3/4 of a mile. You summit via a Class 3 boulder scramble for the last 100 yards (this part will be optional). The elevation gain is less than a 1000 ft with a distance of 8 miles which could be lengthen depending on the desires of the hikers. We will meet at the Vons parking lot in Big Bear Lake at 8:00 am. APR 25 (WED) 5:00 PM TWO TREES-BOX SPRINGS HIKE 3-mile hike up Two Trees Trail from Riverside with 1,000 foot elevation gain. BRING: water, flashlight, and sturdy shoes. MEET: from 215 Fwy in Riverside exit Blaine St. and drive east 2 miles to where the road turns to dirt. This is the hiker parking area for the trail; there is no parking at the actual trailhead. MORENO VALLEY GROUP APR 25 (WED) 9:00 AM JACOBY CYN - HWY 18 TO LUCKY BALDWIN MINE HIKE Moderate to difficult 7-mile round-trip hike with a 1200’ elevation gain. We will meet at Vons in Big Bear Lake and carpool to the trailhead. Those coming from the Lucerne Valley area may want to meet us at the trailhead (6000’ elevation marker on Hwy 18) at 9:15 or so. MOUNTAINS GROUP/NAT SCI APR 28 (TUE) 9:00 AM SANTA ANA RIVER TRAIL – LOOP FROM GLASS RD HIKE 9:00 AM, moderate, 10 mile round trip hike along the Santa Ana River Trail with an 800’ to 1000’ elevation gain. We will meet at Vons in Big Bear Lake and carpool to the trailhead. Those coming from the Redlands area can meet us at the intersection of Glass Road and Route 38 at about 9:30. BIG BEAR GROUP APR 28 (SAT) 7:30 AM NORTH ETIWANDA PRESERVE SERVICE This Earth Environmental Stewardship Day will be a restoration effort sponsored by the Cucamonga Valley Water District and the Frontier Project. This fascinating environmental gem is host to native wildlife and plants as well as historically significant sites. Plus the panoramic views are really outasight. MEET: North Etiwanda Preserve Visitor Parking (Exit Interstate 210 West off Interstate 15 to Day Creek – exit right (North) and follow Day Creek to the end, turn left on Etiwanda Avenue and proceed to Visitor Parking just past the pavement. This project will clear more, using loppers, small handsaws, and herbicide. Meet in Escalante Sunday morning, caravan to the trailhead and hike in about 7 miles. Expect knee to thigh deep river crossings, and some bushwhacking. We work 4 days, dayhike 1 day and hike out Saturday morning. Participants must follow work-clothing requirements, provide their own food and gear on the trail, and travel expenses to the trailhead. Those hikers completing all nine segments will receive a special recognition patch. This hike is a 14.2 mile through- hike. RATING: Strenuous. MEET: In McDonalds parking lot where the I-15 meets with Hwy 138 at the Cajon Junction. BRING: ten essentials, layered clothing, sun protection, 3.0 liters of water, food, sunglasses, hat and good hiking shoes. Adventure Pass will be required for parking at the trailhead. The area is north of Winnemucca. It is easy work and the outing is family oriented. All meals are provided except lunch. The route passes through the beautiful Children’s Forest with great views of San Gorgonio Mtn, Mt San Jacinto and Mt. Baldy. As we gain elevation, we will pass through rock formations and see changes in vegetation. BRING: lunch, water, and the ten essentials. WEAR sturdy boots. The Scenery changes abruptly when a desert panorama pops out at you. We will hike downhill 1 mile to a shady campsite at Cedar Springs for lunch. The trailhead is located east of Lake Hemet off highway 74. Turn left on Morris Ranch Road. Follow the paved road to the end, the trailhead is on the right. If you come in on the 371 turn left (west) on highway 74 and Morris Ranch Road will be on the right about a mile or so down the road. Bring lots of water lunch and snacks. The trail follows the creek for the first 1 1/2 miles under a canopy of oak, alder, aspen, spruce, fir, and pine. Scenic view in all directions from the top of Cucamonga Peak. Rain cancels. We will hike north on the Santa Ana River Trail along a ridge to Heart Bar Road and return via the “Meadow Trail”. We will meet at Vons parking lot in Big Bear Lake and carpool to the trailhead. For those coming from the Redlands area, meet us at 9:40 AM in the South Fork parking lot on Hwy 38 between the Santa Ana and South Fork Rivers. Drivers must display Adventure Passes. MORENO VALLEY GROUP JUN 29-JULY 1 (FRI-SUN) EMIGRANT TRAILS IN THE BLACK ROCK DESERT We'll probably leave Reno, NV, Friday evening and head to Double Hot Springs about 30 miles north of Gerlach, NV to meet a group of Trails West people who are doing a survey of the Emigrant trail between Double Hot Springs and Mud Meadows about 20 miles north - Some hiking, some driving, some time in hot springs. We'll probably visit the ghost town site of Hardin City and the Lassen-Clapper Murder site nearby. Sorry, no RV's or Trailers, 4 WD strongly preferred. Sign up 6/15-6/27. One-hundred and sixty years later we will follow this route through beautiful subalpine country with breath-taking views across the vast San Bernardino Valley to the distant San Gabriel Mountains. The round trip hiking distance is 16.0 miles with an elevation gain of 4,700’. RATED: Strenuous, BRING: ten-essentials, layered clothing, lunch, 2 liters of water, water purification drops, sun-protection, and good hiking boots. MEET: Take Hwy 38 east from Redlands to mountain town of Angelus Oaks. We will meet in front of the Oak’s restaurant. From there we will caravan to the trailhead. JUL 21-22 (SAT-SUN) 8:15 AM ONYX SUMMIT TO DEER SPRINGS BACKPACK This is a backkpacking trip for beginners to learn the requirements for over-night wilderness camping. From Onyx Summit near Big Bear Lake you will backpack 4 miles to Deer Springs Trail Camp where the group will camp overnight. Multiple skills will be demonstrated including the use of a compasss, loading a backpack, tent setup, lighting a fire, cooking and other basic skills. Call the hiking leader for details.
