Group Update:
 By Mary Ann Ruiz

Los Serranos Group members are active on many fronts.  At our March meeting, the group took a stand on the California State Parks budget reduction. Los Serranos joined the Save Our State Parks effort by endorsing the campaign of the California State Parks Foundation .  In addition to endorsing this campaign, many of our members took time out during the meeting to write personal letters to the Governor outlining our concerns.

Another area of concern for our group is the MWD plan to build a new road through Chino Hills State Park.  A lawsuit against this proposal has been filed by Hills for Everyone (founders of the State Park), Defenders of Wildlife, the Planning and Conservation League, and Friends of Harbors, Beaches, and Parks to challenge approval of a secondary access road to the Robert Diemer Water Filtration Plant (operated by MWD) that will cut through Chino Hills State Park in north Orange County.  The organizations joined together in a suit that was filed in Orange County Superior Court on Thursday, March 13.  A press release about this lawsuit is available on the Hills for Everyone website.  Los Serranos Group Conservation Chair Sid Silliman is looking into this issue to see what our response should be and how we can help.

Our Outings leaders continue to come up with great opportunities to get out and enjoy our local mountains and hills.  Joe Whyte has led a series of Pacific Crest Trail hikes that have been very successful.  Mary Ann’s Chino Hills State Park hike was a good chance to see this park, unknown to most of Southern California, in it’s best spring-time season.  The moonlight hike in Claremont continues to be a favorite.  After several months of no night-time access to the Johnson’s Pasture area, we now have permission to once again hike in these lovely hills in the moonlight. In addition our popular “Dinner on the Town’ events continue to help current members catch up and introduce new members to our group.

In June the Los Serranos Group meeting will again be held at the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens in Claremont.  This was a very successful event last year and we invite any and all from the Chapter to attend this great evening.  This year our meeting on June 17 will start early, at the Garden, with gates opening to Sierra Club guests at 5:00 pm.  Bring a picnic dinner to enjoy under the oaks and sycamores at your leisure.  At 7:00 pm, we will have a tour through the garden.  After the tour our normal business meeting and announcements will wrap up a super evening.  We especially invite NEW MEMBERS to come to this meeting event to get to know our group and see this wonderful resource and place for renewal, Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens.
